nomadic device

Design Project
an exercise in understanding structure through full scale building and material

constraints:
can not modify studio furniture
keep visual continuity at eye level throughout studio
must collapse, fold and/or dissemble to be mobile
integrate casters
needs to provide an elevated horizontal surface that can support your weight

>consider material use: wood, steel, cardboard, pvc piping, reused, etc. / connection to table / vertical, lateral and moment forces / adjacent structures / hardware: hinges, pin and socket, casters, etc.

structural/detail references:

Carlo Scarpa - (above) http://www.archiviocarloscarpa.it/
obsession with details that beautifully enhance the space and architecture
Allan Wexler - http://www.allanwexlerstudio.com/architecture/08_architecture.htm
some of his mobile devices utilize sliding, folding, opening to activate the unit
PS1 young architects program installations - (google images)
good for budget repeatable structures
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion - http://www.serpentinegallery.org/architecture/
variations on small scale temporary architecture installations
Ball-Nogues Studio - http://www.ball-nogues.com/
mastered the art of machine and draping (not necessarily relevant but very cool)

for wednesday (9.15):
complete "as-built" drawings of the desk and context
full scale cardboard mock-up with developed conceptual idea
full scale details mock-up
